O Caso da Ilha da Trindade relaciona-se à suposta aparição de um objeto voador não identificado que teria sido visto pela tripulação do navio Almirante Saldanha, da Marinha Brasileira, em 16 de janeiro de 1958.

O CASO

Em 16 de janeiro de 1958, o fotógrafo baiano, radicado em Niterói, Almiro Baraúna (30 de abril de 1916 - Niterói, 29 de julho de 2000), então com 42 anos de idade, convidado pela Marinha do Brasil para participar de pesquisas oceanográficas na Ilha da Trindade, no litoral capixaba, teria feito, a bordo do navio-escola Almirante Saldanha, quatro fotografias de uma nave discóide sobre a ilha. O filme foi revelado ainda a bordo do navio – mais precisamente na enfermaria, improvisada como laboratório –, mas devido ao pequeno tamanho do negativo, a suposta nave não pôde ser visualizada por nenhum dos presentes.  Dias após o desembarque no continente, Baraúna apresentou à imprensa as fotografias em positivo, ampliadas, alegando serem do tal objeto. Só duas pessoas, o capitão da Força Aérea Brasileira José Teobaldo Viegas e Amilar Vieira Filho, amigos de Baraúna, alegaram ter visto o disco, além do próprio fotógrafo. Em 1967, Baraúna escreveu como o avistamento se teria dado:

"Em 16 de janeiro de 1958, o navio-escola de guerra da marinha “Almirante Saldanha” estava atracado em uma enseada na Ilha Trindade, a umas 800 milhas da costa do Espírito Santo. Eram por volta das 11h, céu claro, a tripulação se preparava para retornar ao Rio de Janeiro quando de repente um grupo de pessoas na popa do navio, dentre elas o capitão-aviador aposentado da Força Aérea Brasileira José Viegas, alertou a todos. Instantaneamente, todos que estavam no convés, umas cinquenta pessoas, começaram a ver um estranho objeto prateado e com forma de pires que se moveu do mar na direção da ilha. O objeto não emitiu nenhum ruído, era luminoso e às vezes se movia rapidamente, depois devagar, para cima e suavemente para baixo e quando acelerava deixava um rastro branco fosforescente que desaparecia rapidamente.

Em sua trajetória, o objeto desapareceu detrás da montanha Pico Desejado e todos esperavam que fosse aparecer do outro lado da montanha, ele reapareceu na mesma direção, parou por alguns segundos e então desapareceu novamente a uma grande velocidade pelo horizonte. Em um primeiro momento quando o objeto retornou, fui capaz de tirar seis fotos, das quais duas se perderam devido ao pandemônio no convés, e as outras quatro fotos mostram o objeto no horizonte, em uma sequência razoável, aproximando-se da ilha do lado da montanha, e finalmente desaparecendo, indo embora. Eu tirei o filme de minha câmera 20 minutos depois seguindo o pedido do comandante, que queria saber se as fotos eram de boa qualidade. Quase toda a tripulação do navio viu o filme e eram unânimes em seus reportes ao Serviço Secreto da Marinha Brasileira. Estes eram os tripulantes do navio: Chefe Amilar Vieira Filho, banqueiro, mergulhador e atleta; Vice-Chefe Capitão-Aviador aposentado da Força Aérea Brasileira José Viegas; Mergulhadores: Aluizio e Mauro; Fotógrafo: Almiro Baraúna

O grupo acima também era membro do grupo de caça submarina do Icaraí. Entre os cinco membros, apenas Mauro e Aluizio não viram o objeto porque estavam na cozinha do navio e quando correram para vê-lo, este já havia desaparecido. De acordo aos rumores que escutei no convés, o equipamento elétrico do navio parou durante a aparição do objeto; o que posso confirmar é que depois do navio deixar a ilha, o equipamento elétrico parou três vezes e os oficiais não tinham nenhuma firme explicação para o que estava acontecendo. Toda vez que o navio parava, as luzes esvaneciam lentamente até o ponto em que se apagavam completamente. Quando isso acontecia, os oficiais caminhavam ao convés com seus binóculos, no entanto, o céu já estava cheio de nuvens e não podiam ver nada. Preciso dizer que se o repórter do jornal "Correio da Manhã" não fosse esperto o suficiente para tirar cópias das fotos oferecidas ao então presidente Juscelino Kubitschek, talvez ninguém soubesse sobre esses fatos já que a Marinha havia me “marcado”, perguntando quanto eu queria para não dar nenhuma publicidade às fotos. Eu gostaria de deixar claro que todos os oficiais com quem tive contato durante todo o tempo do inquérito foram muito amáveis comigo, me senti completamente confortável e não impuseram nenhuma objeção à revelação do caso. Apenas mencionaram que a natureza sensacionalista do caso poderia causar pânico na população e essa era a razão pela qual as Forças Armadas Brasileiras queriam evitar publicidade a casos dessa natureza.

CONTRADIÇÕES DOS ENVOLVIDOS

Tudo indica que Almiro Baraúna, Amilar Vieira Filho e José Teobaldo Viegas simularam o avistamento do disco voador, pois caíram em diversas contradições. A começar por Viegas, que disse que Baraúna se trancou no laboratório improvisado do navio para revelar o filme em companhia do comandante Carlos Bacellar. O que foi desmentido em carta pelo próprio comandante: “O capitão (da reserva) da FAB José Viegas ficou segurando uma lanterna durante a revelação do filme enquanto eu aguardava do lado de fora.

​

Já Baraúna, por sua vez, não raro se confundiu, exagerou fatos ou mentiu deliberadamente. Referindo-se aos momentos que antecederam o suposto avistamento do óvni, declarou à revista O Cruzeiro:“O navio estava se apresentando para levantar âncora, de volta ao Rio. Eu estava no convés observando a faina da suspensão da lancha na qual são feitos os desembarques para a Ilha até a metade do caminho (o restante é feito em balsas, pois a Ilha não tem ancoradouro). O mar estava agitadíssimo. O tempo estava nublado claro, sem sombras. Eu estava com a minha Rolleiflex 2,8, modelo E, num estojo de alumínio que a protegia contra a água e o salitre. Havia deixado, momentos antes, a minha Leica com teleobjetiva no meu camarote. O convés estava cheio de marinheiros e oficiais. De repente, fui chamado em altos brados pelo capitão Viegas e por Amilar Vieira, os quais apontavam determinado lugar no céu e gritavam que estavam vendo um objeto brilhante se aproximar da ilha.

​

” Numa entrevista concedida em 1997 para a revista Ufo, o ovniólogo Marco Antônio Petit registrou outra versão da boca de Baraúna: “O fotógrafo não passou muito bem: chegou enjoado à embarcação e foi deitar-se ao convés. Pouco depois do meio-dia, em meio a uma gritaria, um tenente da tripulação alertou o fotógrafo para a presença de um objeto voador metálico e discoidal, que evoluía no seu rumo ao navio.”[6] Portanto, diferentemente do que dissera antes, não só Baraúna estaria enjoado, como teria sido alertado da presença do UFO por um tenente, e não por um capitão.

​

Há mais, porém: não há dúvida de que Baraúna exagerou o número de testemunhas da suposta aparição. Ele dizia que, no momento do surgimento do disco, “o convés estava cheio de marinheiros e oficiais” e que quase cem pessoas teriam confirmado num inquérito a visão do objeto. Também nisso foi desmentido: o capitão-de-fragata Paulo de Castro Moreira da Silva, que estava a bordo do Almirante Saldanha em 16 de janeiro de 1958, afirmou ao jornal O Globo que dos oficiais, o único a confirmar a aparição foi o tenente Homero Ribeiro, e que no total apenas “umas oito” pessoas teriam visto alguma coisa – praças, decerto marinheiros e sargentos, que provavelmente foram induzidos a achar que viram algo.[7] Um integrante da tripulação, localizado anos depois, e que garantiu estar no convés no momento do tumulto, garantiu que nem ele nem qualquer um dos colegas viu de fato coisa alguma.

​

 Referindo-se à revelação do filme em si, Baraúna disse: “O comandante e vários oficiais do navio mostraram interesse em ver o que havia saído nas fotos. Isso, aliado à minha própria curiosidade, fez com que eu revelasse o filme imediatamente, a bordo.”[5] Outra contradição: Bacellar contou em carta ao repórter João Martins que Baraúna não revelou o filme imediatamente, mas apenas uma hora depois do episódio, devido ao seu estado aparente de grande nervosismo.

​

Documentos resgatados em abril de 2011 nos arquivos da Marinha - e nunca antes divulgados publicamente - revelam que após o processo de revelação do negativo a bordo do navio, Bacellar disse ter visto em apenas três chapas do filme (e não em quatro) o que chamou minimamente de uma “estranha mancha”, e permitiu que Baraúna levasse os negativos para sua casa após o retorno do navio ao Rio de Janeiro, deixando o fotógrafo livre de qualquer fiscalização militar que impedisse uma eventual montagem.

​

Para dar credibilidade à história, e vender as suas fotografias a um bom preço – como acabou conseguindo –, Baraúna disse à imprensa, reiteradas vezes, que as suas fotografias do óvni já haviam sido autenticadas em duas análises, uma pela empresa Cruzeiro do Sul e outra pela Marinha:

​

“Compareci ao Ministério e fui apresentado a vários oficiais superiores da Armada, que me fizeram toda a sorte de perguntas. Ao todo fui lá duas vezes. Da primeira deixei os negativos, para exame. Eles foram enviados, pelo que sei, ao Serviço Aerofotogramétrico da Cruzeiro do Sul, onde ficaram quatro dias. Foi-me dito, pelos oficiais, que os negativos estavam acima de qualquer dúvida. Na segunda vez, foram feitos testes de tempo: enquanto eu manejava a Rolleiflex, três oficiais cronometravam a duração da manobra. Chegaram à conclusão, por esse teste e pelo estudo da posição do navio e de cartas da Ilha, que o objeto se deslocara, nos momentos em que acelerou, numa velocidade entre 900 e 1.000 quilômetros horários. O seu tamanho também foi calculado, pelo estudo dos pontos da Ilha aparecidos nas fotos, diagramas feitos sobre cartas, etc.; deveria ter ele 40m de diâmetro por 8 de espessura.”

 

Baraúna foi prontamente desmentido pelo diretor-superintendente da Cruzeiro do Sul, Sr. Hélio Meireles, que fez questão de registrar no jornal O Globo: “Por favor, desminta isso pelo O Globo, pois não conheço pessoalmente o fotógrafo Almiro Baraúna nem o Serviço Aerofotogramétrico Cruzeiro do Sul fez qualquer trabalho para ele. Estamos totalmente alheios a esse assunto de disco voador.”

​

O fotógrafo também afirmou que a Marinha tinha calculado que o óvni tinha 40m de diâmetro por 8 de espessura, e que viajava a no mínimo 900 km/h. Entretanto, em nenhuma parte dos documentos oficiais da Marinha Brasileira se mencionam tais dados.

​

Além disso, o próprio relatório final elaborado pelo Estado Maior da Armada (EMA) não autentica as fotografias, limitando-se a concluir que, apesar da empresa contratada para analisar os negativos, a Serviço Aerofotogramétrico da Cruzeiro do Sul, não ter detectado vestígios de fraude, a mesma não descartou a possibilidade de que os negativos pudessem ser sim o resultado de uma montagem bem elaborada.

​

Posteriormente as fotografias de Baraúna foram examinadas pela Força Aérea dos Estados Unidos, mais especificamente pelos cientistas do Projeto Blue Book, e consideradas fraudes. A análise das imagens evidenciou que o objeto visualizado possuía pouco contraste e nenhuma sombra ao sol do meio-dia, e também que parecia estar invertido numa fotografia em comparação às outras.

NOTA OFICIAL DA MARINHA

A Marinha do Brasil convocou uma coletiva de imprensa e confirmou em nota oficial que um artefato havia sido observado pelos passageiros da embarcação Almirante Saldanha, em 16 de janeiro de 1958. A nota afirmava ainda "que as análises dos negativos originais, realizadas inicialmente pelo Departamento de Hidrografia e Navegação Marinha e posteriormente pelo Serviço Aerofogramétrico da Cruzeiro do Sul (onde foram estudados de maneira mais profunda), não haviam revelado qualquer sinal de fraude".

​

Apesar do inquerito ter sido classificado como confidencial na época, constata-se que alguns trechos deste documento revelados pela imprensa são os mesmos que constam do relatório confidencial (Relatório sobre a observação de objetos aéreos não identificados, registrados na Ilha de Trindade, no período compreendido entre 05 de dezembro de 1957 a 16 de janeiro de 1958) da Marinha que vazou em 1964.

​

Este é o relatório final das investigações das aparições de OVNIs por sobre a Ilha de Trindade, e é assinado pelo oficial do Serviço de Inteligência da Marina Brasileira Capitão de Corveta José Geraldo Brandão, que investigou o caso.

​

Quando o relatório vazou, o documento acabou sendo publicado em janeiro de 1965 nos Estados Unidos no boletim da Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO). Segundo Coral Lorezen (fundadora e pesquisadora da APRO) "este relatório da Marinha  e mais alguns documentos tramitados internamente entre os militares da Armada Brasileira, foram recebidos por ela em outubro de 1964, enviados por um millitar da Marinha Brasileira que havia entrado na reserva".

 

Foi enviado ofício nº 00186 de 20 de março de 1958  ao Ministro da Marinha, pelo então deputado Sérgio Magalhães, solicitando cópia do inquérito - CONFIDENCIAL - feito pelo Estado Maior da Armada do caso ocorrido na Ilha de Trindade.

​

No item 3 do ofício nº 898 de 09 de abril de 1958 o Ministro responde que: "o fato foi mantido em sigilo para que pudesse ser concluído o Inquérito Instaurado, tornar público um fato ocorrido em navio seu, sem que antes tivesse feito as necessárias investigações a respeito.  Anexo a este ofício foi enviado cópia do Inquerito e quatro cópias fotográficas.

E o que diz o relatório?

​

"No dia 31 de dezembro foi enviado um rádio cifrado ao EMA (Estado Maior da Armada), com informações à DHN (Departamento de Hidrografia e Navegação), comunicando haver sido avistado sobre a ilha um objeto voador não identificado, da forma de um elipsóide de revolução bem achatado, cor de aço inoxidável, a cerca de 1600 metros de altitude, deslocando-se com velocidade vertiginosa no rumo aproximado de nordeste, sem fazer qualquer ruído.

​

O objeto foi visto pelo médico, 1º Ten. Carlos Moreira Murta, 1º Cl=Sl Sebastião Soriano de Souza e mais cinco operários da Cia. Moraes Rego, um dos quais - o primeiro a avistar o objeto - declarou que já o vira anteriormente, no dia 5 de dezembro, e que comunicara isso aos seus colegas não tendo sido, entretanto, levado a sério. em ambas as vezes era quase oito horas da manhã.

​

No dia seguinte, 1º de janeiro, todas as atenções estavam voltadas para o céu quando surgiu algo, que foi visto por uns vinte homens da guarnição, e que se afirmou ser o mesmo objeto; eu também estava atento e me pareceu, no entanto, tratar-se de uma gaivota. O objeto - ou gaivota - estava projetado sobre o céu e assim não se tinha noção de profundidade; deslocando-se no rumo nordeste, em determinado ponto da trajetória brilhou intensamente, embora durante talvez menos de um segundo.

​

Se era gaivota a sua velocidade seria grande, mas dentro do razoável; se era realmente o objeto, deveria estar a uma distância considerável e nesse caso, a sua velocidade era incrível. Esse fato não foi comunicado ao EMA em virtude da dúvida que subsistiu. Finalmente, no dia 16, cerc de 11:00, achava-me já a bordo do NE 'Almirante Saldanha', após a passagem de comando do Posto, quando fui avisado de que um objeto aéreo não identificado fora visto, de bordo, sobre a ilha.

​

Encontrava-me no camarote, nesse momento, e subi imediatamente ao tombadilho, onde encontrei várias pessoas um pouco excitadas com o que haviam visto, entre essas o Sr. Almiro Baraúna, fotógrafo profissional, que acompanhara diversos caçadores de mergulho à ilha de Trindade, afim de fazer fotografias submarinas.

​

Vi-o, ainda no tombadilho, retirar o rolo de filme da máquina e o segui à câmara escura para assistir à revelação, não tendo nela entrado devido ao forte calor que fazia, ficando do lado de fora durante o tempo necessário à operação, ou seja, 10 minutos. Saindo da câmara, ainda com o filme na bacia, vi-o retirá-lo e assisti à sua decepção quando bastante nervoso, supôs que não obtivera êxito.

​

Tomei o filme, examinei-o melhor e, em três negativos e em posições diferentes, notei a presença de uma estranha mancha que mais tarde foi perfeitamente identificada. O filme ficou em poder do Sr. Baraúna que, sob  insistência minha, comprometeu-se a comparecer ao EMA caso houvesse necessidade. Ao chegar ao Rio lá fui e tratei do caso com o CC José Geraldo Brandão, prestando, então, depoimento verbal. A partir de então tudo o que foi feito foi de iniciativa exclusiva do EMA."

CONFISSÕES DE PESSOAS PRÓXIMAS

Em 15 de agosto de 2010, o programa Fantástico, da Rede Globo, divulgou pela primeira vez como foi montado o óvni da Ilha de Trindade. A equipe do programa descobriu a publicitária Emília Bittencourt, uma amiga de Baraúna, que relatou o que ouviu da boca do próprio fotógrafo: “Ele pegou duas colheres de cozinha, juntou e improvisou uma nave espacial e usou de pano de fundo a geladeira da casa dele. Ele fotografou na porta da geladeira o objeto com a iluminação perfeita. Ele ria muito sobre o assunto”, contou ela.

​

Em janeiro de 2011 um sobrinho de Almiro Baraúna, de 69 anos, e igualmente fotógrafo, também revelou que ouviu do próprio Baraúna a história de como tudo aconteceu e como seu tio havia produzido a montagem das fotografias do disco voador em seu laboratório caseiro, assim que retornou da viagem à Ilha da Trindade.

 

CONCLUSÕES

São fatos conhecidos que tanto José Teobaldo Viegas quanto Amilar Vieira Filho eram amigos de Almiro Baraúna; que os três residiam em Niterói, e que se viam com frequência; que todos eram membros do Clube de Caça Submarina de Icaraí, fundado e presidido por Vieira Filho; e que até a entrevista de Vieira Filho para O Globo contou com a influência de Baraúna, que foi quem o convenceu a prestar depoimento.

​

As evidências sugerem que tudo não passou de uma trama orquestrada por Baraúna, com a colaboração de Viegas e Vieira Filho... e provavelmente também do tenente Ribeiro. Decerto Baraúna começou a imaginar o embuste logo após embarcar no Almirante Saldanha. Fez ao todo seis fotografias de paisagens da ilha, registrando em quatro muito provavelmente gaivotas em voo solitário e/ou alguns dos balões-sonda cotidianamente soltos pela Marinha para estudos climáticos. Fato é que ninguém pôde discernir o que eram os pontos fixados na emulsão, e isso, bem como o fato do filme não ter sido confiscado nem copiado, possibilitou a fraude, nunca confessada publicamente por nenhum dos seus participantes.

​

Nos dias atuais, publicamente a Marinha não tem interesse direto no assunto. Possivelmente, ela registre e investigue o assunto OVNI  ou OSNI caso ocorra dentro de sua jurisdição. Porém cabe-nos lembrar que a "Marinha trabalha silenciosamente e com muita devoção ao dever, sem que seu membros esperem palavras de elogia ou de reconhecimento"(Almirante Arthur Oscar Saldanha da Gama).

UM POST SCRIPTUM PARA FINALIZAR

Embora existam evidência contra e a favor do caso da Ilha de Trindade, com a família alegando que tudo não passou de uma piada de mau gosto de Baraúna e seus amigos, podemos constatar que ao analisarmos outros documentos confidenciais da época, que a OVNI alegadamente visto pelas pessoas no tombadilho do NE `Almirante Saldanha', não teria sido o único a ser observado em 1958.

O relatório feito pelo Capitão de Corveta Eduardo Jorge dos Santos Crespo de Castro (Comandante da 6º Turma do POIT) relata na seção "Ocorrências" a presença de um objeto aéreo não identificado:

​"Na noite do dia 5 cerca de 2ø41fui chamado em minha residência pelo MN. 1ª. CL. Sl - Silvio Barbosa Lima para ver uma estranha luz de cor avermelhada brilhando intensamente que se encontrava numa marcação verdadeira aproximada de 45º e a uma altura do Horizonte 20º. Tinha ao meu lado nesse momento o 1º Tenente (MD)-Dr. Arindal Pires e o 1ª .CL.Sl Manuel Januário de Assis. Tomei imediatamente a hora 2042 e após a luz ter chegado a um máximo diminuiu até sumir voltando a seguir a um máximo e sumindo a seguir, eram 2046. O céu estava límpido, nada houve a mais que registrar".

Verdade? Brincadeira de mau gosto? Acobertamento? Mais um caso sem finalização

Embora eu acredite que com tantos militares envolvidos nos avistamentos, seria difícil imaginar que eles tenham se confundido.

The Trindade Island Case is related to the alleged appearance of an unidentified flying object that would have been seen by the crew of the ship Almirante Saldanha, of the Brazilian Navy, on January 16, 1958.

 

 

THE CASE

 

On January 16, 1958, the Bahian photographer, based in Niterói, Almiro Baraúna (April 30, 1916 - Niterói, July 29, 2000), then 42 years old, invited by the Brazilian Navy to participate in oceanographic research on Trindade Island, on the Espírito Santo coast, he would have taken, on board the school ship Almirante Saldanha, four photographs of a disco-like ship over the island. The film was still developed on board the ship - more precisely in the infirmary, improvised as a laboratory -, but due to the small size of the negative, the alleged ship could not be seen by any of those present. Days after landing on the continent, Baraúna presented the photographs in positive, enlarged form, claiming to be of the object. Only two people, Brazilian Air Force captain José Teobaldo Viegas and Amilar Vieira Filho, friends of Baraúna, claimed to have seen the disc, in addition to the photographer himself. In 1967, Baraúna wrote how the sighting would have happened:

"On January 16, 1958, the navy warship school ship“ Almirante Saldanha ”was moored in an inlet on Trindade Island, some 800 miles off the coast of Espírito Santo. It was around 11 am, clear sky, the crew was getting ready to return to Rio de Janeiro when suddenly a group of people at the stern of the ship, among them retired aviation captain of the Brazilian Air Force José Viegas, alerted everyone. Instantly, everyone on deck, some fifty people, they began to see a strange silver and saucer-shaped object that moved from the sea towards the island. The object made no noise, it was luminous and sometimes moved quickly, then slowly, upwards and smoothly downwards and when it accelerated it left a white phosphorescent trail that disappeared quickly.

In its trajectory, the object disappeared behind the Pico Desired mountain and everyone expected it to appear on the other side of the mountain, it reappeared in the same direction, stopped for a few seconds and then disappeared again at a great speed across the horizon. At first when the object returned, I was able to take six photos, two of which were lost due to pandemonium on the deck, and the other four photos show the object on the horizon, in a reasonable sequence, approaching the island on the side from the mountain, and finally disappearing, leaving. I took the film out of my camera 20 minutes later, following the commander's request, who wanted to know if the photos were of good quality. Almost all the ship's crew saw the film and were unanimous in their reports to the Brazilian Navy Secret Service. The group above was also a member of the Icaraí spearfishing group. Among the five members, only Mauro and Aluizio did not see the object because they were in the ship's kitchen and when they ran to see it, it had already disappeared. According to the rumors I heard on deck, the ship's electrical equipment stopped during the object's appearance; what i can confirm is that after the ship left the island, the electrical equipment stopped three times and the officers had no firm explanation for what was going on. Every time the ship stopped, the lights slowly faded to the point where they went out completely. When that happened, the officers walked on deck with their binoculars, however, the sky was already full of clouds and they couldn't see anything. I have to say that if the reporter for the newspaper "Correio da Manhã" was not smart enough to take copies of the photos offered to then President Juscelino Kubitschek, perhaps no one would know about these facts since the Navy had "marked" me, asking how much I wanted to not give any publicity to the photos. I would like to make it clear that all the officers with whom I had contact during the entire time of the investigation were very kind to me, I felt completely comfortable and did not object to the disclosure of the case. They just mentioned that the sensational nature of the case could cause panic in the population and that was the reason why the Brazilian Armed Forces wanted to avoid publicizing cases of this nature.

 

CONTRADICTIONS OF THE INVOLVED

 

Everything indicates that Almiro Baraúna, Amilar Vieira Filho and José Teobaldo Viegas simulated the sighting of the flying saucer, as they fell into several contradictions. Starting with Viegas, who said that Baraúna locked herself in the ship's improvised laboratory to develop the film in the company of commander Carlos Bacellar. What was denied in a letter by the commander himself: “FAB captain (reserve) José Viegas was holding a flashlight during the development of the film while I was waiting outside.

 

 

Baraúna, on the other hand, often got confused, exaggerated facts or deliberately lied. Referring to the moments that preceded the alleged sighting of the UFO, he declared to O Cruzeiro magazine: “The ship was presenting itself to raise anchor, back to Rio. I was on the deck watching the work of the suspension of the launch in which the boats are made. landings to the Island until halfway (the rest is done in ferries, as the Island has no anchorage). The sea was very agitated. The weather was cloudy, clear, with no shadows. I had my Rolleiflex 2.8, model E, in an aluminum case that protected it from water and saltpeter. I had left my Leica with a telephoto lens in my cabin moments before. The deck was full of sailors and officers. Suddenly, I was called out loudly by Captain Viegas and Amilar Vieira, who pointed to a certain place in the sky and shouted that they were seeing a bright object approaching the island.

 

”In an interview granted in 1997 to the magazine Ufo, the ufologist Marco Antônio Petit recorded another version of Baraúna's mouth:“ The photographer did not feel well: he got sick on the boat and went to bed. Shortly after noon, in the midst of shouting, a crew lieutenant alerted the photographer to the presence of a metallic and discoidal flying object, which was evolving towards the ship. ”[6] So, differently from what he had said before , not only would Baraúna be sick, but he would have been alerted to the presence of the UFO by a lieutenant, and not by a captain.

 

 

There is more, however: there is no doubt that Barauna exaggerated the number of witnesses to the alleged apparition. He said that, at the time of the disc's appearance, "the deck was full of sailors and officers" and that almost a hundred people would have confirmed the object's vision in an investigation. This was also denied: the frigate captain Paulo de Castro Moreira da Silva, who was on board Admiral Saldanha on January 16, 1958, told the newspaper O Globo that the officers, the only one to confirm the appearance, was the lieutenant Homero Ribeiro, and that in total only "some eight" people would have seen something - squares, certainly sailors and sergeants, who were probably induced to think they saw something. [7] A member of the crew, located years later, who guaranteed to be on deck at the time of the turmoil, guaranteed that neither he nor any of his colleagues actually saw anything.

 

 Referring to the development of the film itself, Baraúna said: “The captain and several ship officials showed interest in seeing what had come out in the photos. This, coupled with my own curiosity, made me develop the film immediately, on board. ”[5] Another contradiction: Bacellar told reporter João Martins in a letter that Baraúna did not reveal the film immediately, but only an hour after the episode. , due to its apparent state of great nervousness.

 

Documents retrieved in April 2011 from the Navy archives - and never publicly released before - reveal that after the process of developing the negative on board the ship, Bacellar said he saw on only three plates of the film (and not on four) what he called minimally from a “strange stain”, and allowed Baraúna to take the negatives to his home after the ship returned to Rio de Janeiro, leaving the photographer free of any military inspection that would prevent an eventual montage.

To add credibility to the story, and sell his photographs at a good price - as he ended up getting - Baraúna told the press, repeatedly, that his UFO photographs had already been authenticated in two analyzes, one by the company Cruzeiro do Sul and another by the Navy:

“I attended the Ministry and was introduced to several senior officers of the Navy, who asked me all sorts of questions. Altogether I went there twice. At first I left the negatives for examination. They were sent, as far as I know, to Cruzeiro do Sul's Aerophotogrammetric Service, where they stayed for four days. I was told by the officers that the negatives were beyond doubt. The second time, time tests were carried out: while I was handling the Rolleiflex, three officers were timing the duration of the maneuver. They came to the conclusion, by this test and by studying the position of the ship and the island's charts, that the object had moved, at the moments when it accelerated, at a speed between 900 and 1,000 kilometers per hour. Its size was also calculated, by study of the points of the Island shown in the photos, diagrams made on charts, etc .; it should be 40m in diameter and 8m thick. ”

Baraúna was promptly denied by the superintendent of Cruzeiro do Sul, Mr. Hélio Meireles, who made a point of registering in the newspaper O Globo: Cruzeiro do Sul did any work for him. We are totally unaware of this flying saucer issue. ”

 

The photographer also stated that the Navy had calculated that the UFO was 40m in diameter and 8m thick, and that it traveled at least 900 km / h. However, nowhere in the official documents of the Brazilian Navy are such data mentioned.

 

In addition, the final report prepared by the General Staff of the Navy (EMA) does not authenticate the photographs, limiting itself to concluding that, despite the company hired to analyze the negatives, Cruzeiro do Sul's Aerophotogrammetric Service has not detected traces of fraud, it did not rule out the possibility that the negatives could be the result of a well elaborated assembly.

 

Subsequently, the photographs of Barauna were examined by the United States Air Force, more specifically by scientists from the Blue Book Project, and were considered fraudulent. The analysis of the images showed that the visualized object had little contrast and no shadow in the midday sun, and also that it seemed to be inverted in one photograph compared to the others.

 

OFFICIAL NOTE FROM THE NAVY

 

The Brazilian Navy called a press conference and confirmed in an official note that an artifact had been observed by the passengers of the vessel Almirante Saldanha, on January 16, 1958. The note also stated "that the analyzes of the original negatives, initially carried out by the Department of Hydrography and Marine Navigation and later by the Aerofogrammetric Service of Cruzeiro do Sul (where they were studied in more depth), had not revealed any sign of fraud ".

 

Although the survey was classified as confidential at the time, it appears that some excerpts of this document revealed by the press are the same as those contained in the confidential report (Report on the observation of unidentified aerial objects, recorded on Trindade Island, in the period between between December 5, 1957 to January 16, 1958) of the Navy that leaked in 1964.

 

This is the final report of investigations of UFO sightings over Trindade Island, and is signed by the intelligence officer of the Brazilian Marina Corvette Captain José Geraldo Brandão, who investigated the case.

When the report was leaked, the document ended up being published in January 1965 in the United States in the bulletin of the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO). According to Coral Lorezen (founder and researcher of APRO) "this report from the Navy and some other documents processed internally among the military of the Brazilian Armada, were received by her in October 1964, sent by a military officer from the Brazilian Navy who had entered the reserve" .

Official letter 00186 of March 20, 1958 was sent to the Minister of the Navy, by then deputy Sérgio Magalhães, requesting a copy of the inquiry - CONFIDENTIAL - made by the Armed Staff of the case that occurred on the Island of Trindade.

​

In item 3 of letter No. 898 of April 9, 1958, the Minister replies that: "the fact was kept confidential so that the Inquiry could be concluded, to make public a fact that occurred on his ship, without having previously done the necessary a copy of the Inquiry and four photographic copies were attached to this letter.

BARCELLAR REPORT

 

Corvette Captain Carlos Barcellar, then in charge of the POIT (Trindade Island Oceanographic Post, present during the events, describes 4 sightings in the "occurrences" section of his report.

And what does the report say?

​

"On December 31, an encrypted radio was sent to the EMA (Armed Staff), with information to DHN (Department of Hydrography and Navigation), reporting that an unidentified flying object was seen on the island, in the shape of an ellipsoid. with a flattened revolution, stainless steel color, at about 1600 meters of altitude, moving with dizzying speed in the approximate northeast direction, without making any noise.

The object was seen by the doctor, 1st Lt. Carlos Moreira Murta, 1st Cl = Sl Sebastião Soriano de Souza and five other workers from Cia. Moraes Rego, one of whom - the first to spot the object - declared that he had seen it before, on December 5th, and that he had communicated this to his colleagues and has not, however, been taken seriously. both times it was almost eight in the morning.

On the following day, January 1, all attention was turned to heaven when something appeared, which was seen by some twenty garrison men, and which was said to be the same object; I was also attentive and it seemed, however, to be a seagull. The object - or seagull - was projected on the sky and so there was no sense of depth; moving in a northeast direction, at a certain point in the trajectory it shone brightly, although for perhaps less than a second.

 

If he was a gull, his speed would be great, but within reason; if it was really the object, it should be at a considerable distance, in which case its speed was incredible. This fact was not communicated to the EMA due to the doubt that remained. Finally, on the 16th, around 11:00 am, I was already on board the NE 'Almirante Saldanha', after passing the command post, when I was warned that an unidentified aerial object had been seen, on board, over The island.

 

I was in the box at that moment, and I immediately went up to the deck, where I met several people a little excited by what they had seen, including Mr. Almiro Baraúna, a professional photographer, who had accompanied several diving hunters to the island of Trindade, in order to take underwater photos.

 

I saw him, still on the deck, remove the film roll from the machine and I followed him to the darkroom to watch the development, not having entered it due to the strong heat it was doing, staying outside for the time necessary for the operation, or that is, 10 minutes. Leaving the chamber, still with the film in the basin, I saw him remove it and watched his disappointment when he was very nervous, he supposed that he had not been successful.

 

I took the film, examined it better and, in three negatives and in different positions, I noticed the presence of a strange spot that was later perfectly identified. The film was kept by Mr. Baraúna, who, at my insistence, undertook to attend the EMA if there was a need. When I arrived in Rio, I went and dealt with the case with CC José Geraldo Brandão, then giving verbal testimony. From then on, everything that was done was an exclusive initiative of the EMA. "

 

CONFESSIONS OF NEAR PEOPLE

 

On August 15, 2010, Rede Globo's Fantástico program publicized for the first time how the UFO from Trindade Island was set up. The program team discovered the publicist Emília Bittencourt, a friend from Baraúna, who reported what she heard from the photographer's own mouth: “He took two kitchen spoons, gathered and improvised a spaceship and used the house refrigerator as a backdrop his. He photographed the object with the perfect lighting on the refrigerator door. He laughed a lot about it, ”she said.

 

 

 

In January 2011 a nephew of Almiro Baraúna, 69, and also a photographer, also revealed that he heard from Baraúna himself the story of how it all happened and how his uncle had produced the montage of the flying saucer photographs in his home laboratory, as well who returned from the trip to Trindade Island.

 

CONCLUSIONS

 

It is known that both José Teobaldo Viegas and Amilar Vieira Filho were friends of Almiro Baraúna; that the three lived in Niterói, and that they saw each other frequently; that all were members of the Icaraí Underwater Hunting Club, founded and chaired by Vieira Filho; and that even Vieira Filho's interview for O Globo had the influence of Baraúna, who was the one who convinced him to give testimony.

 

The evidence suggests that it was all a plot orchestrated by Baraúna, with the collaboration of Viegas and Vieira Filho ... and probably also Lieutenant Ribeiro. Certainly Baraúna began to imagine the scam soon after embarking on Admiral Saldanha. In all, he took six photographs of the island's landscapes, recording in four very likely solitary seagulls and / or some of the probe balloons released daily by the Navy for climate studies. The fact is that no one was able to discern what the points in the emulsion were, and this, as well as the fact that the film was neither confiscated nor copied, enabled fraud, never publicly confessed by any of its participants.

 

Nowadays, the Navy publicly has no direct interest in the matter. Possibly, it will register and investigate the UFO or OSNI matter if it occurs within its jurisdiction. However, we must remember that "the Navy works silently and with great devotion to duty, without its members expecting words of praise or recognition" (Admiral Arthur Oscar Saldanha da Gama).

 

A SCRIPTUM POST TO FINISH

 

Although there is evidence for and against the Trindade Island case, with the family claiming that it was all just a bad joke from Baraúna and his friends, we can see that when we analyze other confidential documents of the time, which the UFO allegedly saw by the people on the NE `Almirante Saldanha 'deck, he would not have been the only one to be observed in 1958.

 

The report made by Corvette Captain Eduardo Jorge dos Santos Crespo de Castro (Commander of the 6th POIT Panel) reports in the "Occurrences" section the presence of an unidentified aerial object:

 

"On the night of the 5th, about 2.41 pm I was called at my residence by MN. 1st CL. Sl - Silvio Barbosa Lima to see a strange light of red color shining brightly that was in a true mark of approximately 45º and at a height of Horizon 20. At that time I had the 1st Lieutenant (MD) - Dr. Arindal Pires and the 1st .CL.Sl Manuel Januário de Assis, I immediately took the 2042 hour and after the light had reached a maximum it decreased until it disappeared returning after a maximum and then disappearing, it was 2046. The sky was clear, there was nothing more to register ".

 

Truth? Bad taste joke? Cover-up? Another case without finalization

 

Although I believe that with so many military personnel involved in the sightings, it would be difficult to imagine that they were confused.
